Adjusting to life in a retirement community

They are the warm and friendly smiles you see as they come to shake your hand and introduce themselves to you. They proudly wear their name badges to identify themselves around our retirement community. They are your tour guides when you can’t find the activity room or your apartment those first few days of living here.

They are the greeters at the door, your first escorts to the dining room, the inviters to the card games. They are the experts on the community, the reporters of good news, the neatly dressed representatives of your new home, and most of all the good listeners who want to hear all about you. Managers? Staff?

No, but they almost could be. They are residents who were once just where you are in your journey to a new home, and remember those first awkward and insecure moments, as you nervously smile and look around at all the happy people busily engaged in dining and chatting, or boarding the van for an outing. They are our wonderful Ambassadors, and their sole purpose is to make you feel welcome and acquainted with us. We will provide you with a buddy or two, the first days you arrive, and they will stick with you. They just may become your closest friends, or introduce you to your future ones. They don’t make decisions, but they do have regular meeting with the Community Relations Director, and suggest and discuss items that are important to all the residents. We appreciate them so very much. You may see a special meal in the private dining room once in a while for them. Trust me ..they deserve it!
