According to the Washington Administrative Codes Assisted Living or “Boarding Home means any home or other institution however named which is advertised announced or maintained for the express or implied purpose of providing housing, basic services and assuming general responsibility for the safety and well-being of the residents and may also provide domiciliary care.

Basic services means housekeeping services, meals nutritious snacks laundry and activities

Domiciliary care means:

1) assistance with activities of daily living provided by the boarding home either directly or indirectly or
2) Health support serviced if provided directly or indirectly by the boarding home

There are several variations in of services offered at each individual assisted living community. Housekeeping may or may not include changing the bed and washing the towels and linens. Activities may include transportation to medical appointments, shopping and community events, i.e, movies, restaurants.

Domiciliary care may be directed by a Registered Nurse in house or by a Corporate Nurse that facilities many communities. Some Communities may care for incontinences (loss of control of the bladder and or bowel) some may allow wheelchairs, and scooters some may not.

Communities that service independent living residents and offer assisted living services may separate residents that request assisted living services. There may be different dinning rooms and apartments depending on the care a resident requires.

When families and potential residents start looking for communities that offer both, words of advice, look way before an event ever happens. Allowing time to find an Assisted Living, Independent Living, or Retirement Home allows a calm approach to touring and getting to know the community.
